In this second and final phase of the planning assignment, you should work towards a planning solution for Uusmäki that justifies its choices and compromises between the initial goals, your aims and the comments you received on Wednesday.
- How have you solved the conflicting planning goals and boundaires that Jussi has set for you?
- What makes this plan liveable? (i.e. present your planning argumentation for the solution, making a clear connection between premises and the conclusion)
- What was the path and method in your planning process? (i.e. a chronological brief description of how your plan evolved during the two weeks. Did you make multiple iterations? Did you settle on individual parts and built on them?)
Remember that this is assignment is not about evaluating your skills as planners but rather an exercise in attempting to coherently demonstrate the liveability principles you have defined earlier during this course. Everything stated in 5a still holds for this assignment (i.e. the planning goal is still the same).
Practical steps
You now have 2 weeks to finish your plan. There will be a "mid-term critique" on 5th of May, but you should think of it as a check-up for making sure you are heading into the right direction.
Continue planning with Giraffe, but now, import all the zips (down below) as individual Shapefile layers and utilize their data as a guidance for your liveable area plan. How much does traffic noise weigh in your decisions? How about
public transport routes or the natural habitats?
Hint: When you upload the traffic noise shapefile zip, select color styling based on the melu_dB:
Return Format (Midterm)
- The Giraffe project that you will present with screen-sharing
Presentation & Evaluation (Midterm)
- You will have 5 minutes for presenting the plan and there will be 10 minutes for discussion on key issues to be solved and the final direction of the plan.
The presentation will be PRIVATE (i.e. groups will not disclose to each others the contents of their plans). Your group can reserve their private mid-critique time here (write your group's name in the field and check the time):
Return Format (Final)
- PDF or PowerPoint presentation which you will submit to Mycourses with the following slides:
- Graph and verbal presentation of your liveability components (refer to the first assignments you made)
- Ortho map of the final plan area (top-down orthogonal map view)
- Essential perspective views that you complement with annotations highlighting key features (text boxes and arrows)
- The Giraffe project that you will present with screen-sharing
Presentation & Evaluation (Final)
Your presentation shall last no more than 15 minutes and contain the following:
- Verbal presentation of the project with the slides
- Presentation of the Giraffe project in browser
- Show a live sunlight study of the area from multiple angles. We will use 15th of September between sunrise and sunset as a reference date. Please be prepared to open up the sunlight study and set the date to 15th of September and present shadows by rotating the camera for morning, mid-day and evening.
Finally, there will be 10 minutes reserved for peer-to-peer review:
- When another group is presenting their work - discuss with your group in private and decide, which is the principal feature of the plan that has succeeded in regards to the liveability criteria and which is the principal one that has failed or not met the criteria.
- We will go through each group and they shall give their comments to which the presenting group can either respond or agree with briefly.
