Assignment 4: Outline for your state-of-the-art review paper
Instructions for the outline:
Now that you have developed the topic idea further, the next
step is to develop an outline for your paper.
Please use the template attached (Word document or PDF). Take a look at the two sample paper outlines, made by two previous students (Simone Peroni & Alexander Zeiringer). They have given their permission to show their work as examples for how to approach the outline.
An outline is a like a skeleton for the paper: you can plan the sections & headings and list the main contents/ideas of the paragraphs in a bulleted or a numbered list. This template asks you to plan your general approach (main ideas and moves) in the introduction, the organization of the main contents and possibly even the main broad ideas of the conclusion. The introduction and particularly the conclusion can still be very preliminary. This is just a plan for the paper for now, so there is no need to write full sentences at this stage. The ideas can be listed rather on a list form / bulleted form. You can use your prior understanding as well as source-based knowledge here.
In this course, you’ll be writing a state-of-art review report, which
summarizes the recent and most current research on a particular research area.
This report surveys all the on-going arguments and debates. It requires an
understanding of prior research and sometimes has to include an explanation of
earlier research findings and their possible limitations. Your report
will imitate in the most simple form an academic review article. Keep in mind that the
scope will be narrow and you will not expected to read tens of articles for
your background reading. However, you will be required to find at least five
journal articles and in addition to that possible books or other reliable
sources.
Review papers simply aim to scope and review a research area / topic area in question. There is no experiment and thus the results are presented differently in a review paper.
This review papers provides an overview of the most recent developments in tehcnology X. The paper is divided into three broad areas of development....
Length of the final report: 1000-1300 words (no punishment if it goes over the limit, within reason), 150 word abstract + paper
Citation system: Number-reference,
Author-date (decide which specific style you will use), min. of five
peer-reviewed articles from reputable journals
