In 1993, historian Christopher Frayling published a (very short) paper entitled Research in Art and Design, in which he distinguished three possible ways of conducting research in the arts. These are categorized as (1) research into art and design, (2) research for art and design, and (3) research through art and design. Read the paper and prepare to discuss the following questions in class:
- What do you think is the main contribution of this paper?
- The paper has a myriad of problems. Can you spot at least three?
- How is Frayling’s distinction relevant to current research in the arts?
We will use one of these distinctions as starting point to unpack the complex domain of practice-led, practice-based, constructive, and artistic research. Reading the paper is not mandatory, but it will give you some basic vocabulary for the session.
