BLOGs
Periodically through the course, you will make blog posts. There are three purposes for making a blog:
- Clarify your key points and learning for your own group process
- Keep stakeholders updated via the DfG webpage.
- Create content for your final Report In total, you will make 3 blog posts, and these can be used directly as documentation of your process within your final project report.
We have created a template (attached below) to help you make a blog post and to make sure that all the posts have a similar format.
Helpful tips!
Consider the post is a kind of "press release” to civil servants and the general public, i.e. a task to improve one kind of communication skill. Here are some helpful tips to consider (these are not instructions but only tips!):
- The first two sentences should cover the facts, ie. the who, what, where, when, how and why of activities within the course since the last blog post.
- Pick three key points you are trying to make and write in 'reverse pyramid style' (most important point in first paragraph). No more than 1 idea per paragraph.
- Ideal length 3-4 paragraphs of text.
- Be economical with your words. Write in plain language to be accessible to a broad audience, explain special terms like "empathy", "behavior", "design", etc. A reader shouldn't have to search or guess to find the point.
- In the body of the post, consider including at least 1 snappy quote. These quotes, full of salient info about how "gosh darn fantastic” something t is/ was / will be, are constructed by you and approved by the one that is quoted. People often make the mistake of asking someone for a quote, but really the writer writes the whole release, then puts the key things in quotes. Why? Because that is the part that is sure to be published and, as it's a quote, it can't be edited.
- Add the full names and titles of the people you are referring to and possibly the link to their organisations home page.
- Add the complete reference of possible literature/quote references
- Incorporate further links in the text
- Add captions and credits to the photos you use
- Try to think of snappy but informative titles that interest the reader to read further.
- The final paragraph should reiterate the key facts, and include any relevant links to further info.
Getting the blog post online:
- Send the text as a word document to TA Riina riina.ruus@aalto.fi before or on the due date for final checks and editing suggestions.
- Riina and Ramia will put the post in the blog after checkup.
