After completing the course, students are able to develop an interactive user interface that can be used as a prototype or an application for usability testing. Students know how to use user-centred principles, guidelines and patterns in the design and implementation of user interfaces.

    Content

The design and construction of interactive user interfaces. Use of basic user interface elements and style guides.

    Assessment Methods and Criteria

    Lectures and examination, exercises.

    Study Material

In order to improve access to learning material during Covid-19 restrictions, you may user either the book by Shneiderman (available from Aalto's library) or the book by Galitz (available online via Aalto's library access). In your assigments (and in the exam), refer clearly to the material that you have used as reference material. Additionally, in the exam you can indicate which of the books you have been using.

Shneiderman, Ben & Plaisant, Catherine: Designing the User Interface - Strategies for Effective Human-Computer Interaction
    Chapters (4th ed.): 2, 3.3, 3.7, 7, 8, 12, 13
    Chapters (5th ed.): 2, 3.3, 3.7, 6, 7, 11, 12

Additionally, you are required to familiarise yourself with the following guidelines/material so that you are able to use it in your assignments and refer to the content appropriately:

    Lewis, Clayton & Rieman, John: Task-Centered User Interface Design - A Practical Introduction (Web-book, http://hcibib.org/tcuid), Chapter: 3

Smith, Sidney L. & Mosier, Jane N.: User interface design guidelines (www.hcibib.org/sam)

Also, Jeff Johnson's book "Designing with the Mind in Mind : Simple Guide to Understanding User Interface Design Guideline (available via Aalto's library access to Proquest eBook Central) offers a broad range of examples connected to user interface design guidelines.
