Topic outline

  • Want to advance change in a topic or organisation you care about? In this interdisciplinary course, participants will work to analyze and redesign chosen experiences using service design tools. The bachelor-level course is open to all Aalto students and the open university, where the diverse perspectives are utilized in class. The majority of the course workload comes from applying the introduced tools between workshops.

After the course, students will be

    • familiar with the service design process and selected key tools
    • able to deconstruct experiences and analyze related stakeholder data
    • able to apply selected tools to design experiences based on identified needs
    • design small scale experiments to test generated concepts
    • able to take an active role in developing the communities they are involved insteps along the design process
You will work on your own project, but benefit from feedback from peer groups during the Monday afternoon online workshops. You get to choose the challenge you work on yourself - you can come to class with something already in mind, but we'll also have plenty of suggestions for you! The main thing is that you reserve the time for the workshop sessions on Zoom on Mondays 13.15-16.00 18.1.-29.3., and some time in-between to work on your project. However, life happens, so you can be absent twice without it affecting your grade. There will be no class 22.2. (the evaluation week of period III).

The course is organized into 5 modules:
    1. Understanding
    2. Reframing
    3. Ideating
    4. Prototyping and testing
    5. Designing value and legitimacy
Note that the full module contents are visible only after you've registered to the course.
