Step 1 (January) Analysis

12.1. 13:15-15 course and theme introduction (AA). 15:15-17 assignments’  seminar: introducing teachers, the introduction to all assignments and especially the the first task: generations (group work)

19.1. 13:15-17 generation analysis review. Introduction to the second task: libraries (group work)

26.1. 13:15-17 library analysis review. Introduction to the third task: Library concept design. 

SIT teachers present the final building programme for the whole design area before the end of January.



Step 2 (January-February) Concept design for the library building

Includes: propose a location for the library within the design area. SIT students can assist the site research and comment on the work of Aalto students from mid February remotely.

16.2. 13:15-17 Concept review. Introduction to schematic design task. The students will be divided into eight groups of four students (2 from Aalto, 2 from SIT) to discuss their designs, collaborate and proceed later with common site planning.  


Step 3 (February-March): Schematic design 

(in collaboration with SIT)

The students will be in contact to their group colleagues and work together outside the official tutoring times. The student groups review the group members’ work internally. 

23.2. 14:15-17 NOTE! NO tutoring. Usability course analysis sent to students.

2.3. 13:15-14 lecture Samuli Woolston (ALA Architects), 14:15-17 tutoring. Registration to the possible Tokyo trip (March 19-31), 2021. SIT has promised to pay app. 650 eur / Aalto student for travel costs (60,000 or 80,000 yen/ student, depending on a student’s study performance).

9.3. TIME DECIDED: 10-12  lecture by arch. Hidetoshi Ohno, Tokyo; 14:15-17 tutoring

13.3. Final decision on travel to Tokyo (March 19-31), 2021.

Step 4 (end of March) Field trip & workshop 

(in collaboration with SIT)

The areal plan and urban design of the whole area in groups, based on earlier building design. Result: site plan.

The suggested timetable for the workshop travel:

flight Tokyo-Helsinki March 30 


If Aalto can come to Tokyo, the students will undertake the site plan in groups together and there will be a separate timetable for the workshop.

If the live workshop becomes impossible:


March 23rd at 16 Tokyo time (9-13 am Finnish time)

Aalto students present their building design work and SIT students present their initial areal plans: 32 presentations, probably in 4 simultaneous groups.


March 23rd-30th

Students work in pairs and make site plans including the library and other buildings. They can have tutoring both from SIT and Aalto. 

March 26th: Tokyo time 16-18 = Helsinki time 9-11: Antti Ahlava's SIT tutoring time (could be other Aalto teachers as well).


March 30th at 16 Tokyo time, (9-13 am Finnish time)

16 student groups present their finished pair work: a site plan, in app. 2 simultaneous groups. Guest critic: prof. Ohno, Tokyo university.


Step 5 (March - beginning of April) Finetuning

Aalto students finish building design with the site plan of the new surrounding blocks


6.4. 13:15-17 final critique
