Topic outline

  • About the assignment

The goal of the assignment is to stabilize and control a large-scale system. In the assignment, the steam production of a thermal power plant is stabilized with PID and state feedback controllers to meet the steam consumption needs of the power plant. The system is modeled using the MATLAB's Simulink modeling environment.

    - The deadline for the assignment is Wednesday 16.12.2020 at 23:59.

    - A voluntary online introduction to SIMULINK is held on Wednesday 4.11.2020 at 14:15.

    - A voluntary online introduction to dynamic systems is held on Monday 9.11.2020 at 14:15.

    Reception in Zoom

The course assistant has an online reception via Zoom every Wednesday at 14:15 starting on 11.11.2020. The link for the session can be found at the bottom of this page, and it is the same as in the first assignment. The assistant will help you on any problems and/or question you encounter regarding the assignment or the usage of Matlab. The assistant will help each pair (or person) individually, and consequently, the Waiting Room feature of Zoom is enabled. The assistant will pick one pair (or person) at a time from the Waiting Room in the order of arrival, and everyone present in the session will be helped. If no one arrives to the Zoom session in the first 30 minutes, the assistant may leave the session.

If you can't attend the weekly reception and need help, contact the assistant via e-mail.

    Instructions, MATLAB-files, and supplementary material

The assignment instructions are available in both Finnish and English. Two MATLAB-files are provided for the assignment. The thermal power plant has been modeled in the Simulink-model voima.slx and the script param.m sets all necessary parameter values needed by the Simulink-model. There is also a package of supplemental material available. Additionally, the textbook Feedback Systems, Åström K.J. & Murray R.M., Princton University Press, 2008 can be found here.
