Topic outline

  • The exercise sessions are organized remotely until further notice. The exercise sessions are on Wednesdays at 10:15-12:00: https://aalto.zoom.us/j/66233604247

The students will get exercise points by preparing the exercises to be presented at the session. In other words, the problems should be solved before the exercise session. In the beginning of a session, there will be a list available, and the students will mark down, on this list, which exercises that they have prepared to be presented. Each exercise is worth one point. The students will present the solutions and the group will discuss them.

To get points for the exercises, you do not need to have a perfect solution to the problem. It is okay to simply present how far you were able to get with the problem, and the group will then discuss how to proceed. When presenting the exercise, the you should try to use the following protocol:

    1. Plan: Present the problem and explain the physics concept
    • This part of the process is about defining the problem and identifying the relevant parameters and variables. This step is also known as planning. 'Think before you act'
    • Within the framework of this course, the emphasis is heavily on this process.
    2. Execute: Solve the problem using appropriate physics arguments and mathematical tools
    • If the step 1 has been completed appropriately, this part of the process is largely about mechanical execution.
    • If the problem is well defined and the physics questions are well posed after the step 1, the step 2 is simply about finding the appropriate tools to solve the problem step by step.

The exercise sheets can be found on this page at least one week before each session.

If you have any questions about the exercises, please do not hesitate to contact the course assistant.

You may also ask for additional help in the Q&A before the exercise session, if you find some of the exercises too difficult to complete.
